It’s back to school and this morning, Jodie Jenkins, Mariam Serkal and Dr Julie Gowthorpe RSW talk about how one shift in thought can help kids move from the anxiety that comes from trying to predict uncertainty to trusting that they can handle what comes next.
Anxiety and curiosity actually begin in a very similar place: uncertainty. We do not know exactly what is going to happen. The difference is what the brain does with that uncertainty.
The goal is not to eliminate anxiety. A certain amount of anxiety around a new school year is very normal as there’s new teachers, new classrooms, new schedules and changing friendships. There are a lot of unknowns.
The important goal is helping a students develop confidence that they can experience anxiety and still cope.
