During summer, kids get used to late nights, more screens, more flexibility. When September hits, suddenly there’s structure again, so experiencing pushback is normal.

Parents and kids need to remember that while the beginning feels tough, routines eventually provide relief and stability. Routine equals calm while lack of routine equals chaos.

And don’t forget: Parents need to reset too.

In the lead up to the new school semester, OPP are reminding motorists to slow down, stay alert and exercise extra caution as school zones become busier and traffic increases during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up times.

There will also be more than 12,000 students will be going back to over 40 schools operated under the Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board (ALCDSB).

Anxiety and curiosity actually begin in a very similar place: uncertainty. We do not know exactly what is going to happen. The difference is what the brain does with that uncertainty.

The goal is not to eliminate anxiety. A certain amount of anxiety around a new school year is very normal as there’s new teachers, new classrooms, new schedules and changing friendships. There are a lot of unknowns.

The important goal is helping a students develop confidence that they can experience anxiety and still cope.

How do you know when your child is lonely, and what can parents do to help?

Loneliness has been linked with social anxiety, low self-esteem, bullying, peer rejection and depression. It can become a cycle.

A child is rejected and starts thinking, “People don’t like me.” Their confidence drops, so they hesitate to join in. They withdraw to protect themselves, but that withdrawal can make them lonelier.

The 2026 Belleville Caribbean Festival Grand Parade takes place on Saturday at 1pm. The parade begins at the Quinte Courthouse, heads across Bridge Street West, and moves north onto Front Street for a vibrant hour of music, costumes, and culture.

Between 2014 and 2024, Statistics Canada recorded 3,228 police-reported incidents — roughly 64% of all reported incidents in Canada — with 374 reported in 2024 alone.
