Unloading old items at a thrift store can be freeing, but pay attention to what you drop off. Some paintings by iconic artists have been donated, as have other items worth thousands…or even millions of dollars. Here are the four categories of items to fully research before donating them:
-
Precious Metals. Check jewelry for a stamp or hallmark noting the carat. If it doesn’t have a stamp but looks like gold or silver, it could have been polished off or made long before jewelry was stamped. To be sure, use a magnet. If the jewelry sticks to the magnet, it’s likely plated and not pure gold or silver
-
Watches. Several brands hold their value
-
Precious Gemstones. Your gems may not be costume jewelry. Gemstone testers run about $10
-
Valuable Artwork. Use Google Lens or Magnus to look up the piece
