Think about how much time you spend with the people at work. What happens when work suddenly doesn’t feel like a good place to be anymore? Today on the MIX Morning Show, Jodie Jenkins and Mariam Serkal sit down with Dr Julie Gowthorpe RSW to discuss psychological safety at work.
One of the biggest signs of feeling psychologically unsafe at work is being anxious about interacting with a particular person. You might find yourself documenting every conversation, rehearsing what you’re going to say, or worrying about how they’ll react.
You replay conversations during your drive home from work, you wake up at night ruminating.
When you feel psychologically safe, you can ask questions, make mistakes, disagree, or raise concerns without worrying that you’ll be embarrassed or punished.
Now, that doesn’t mean everyone has to get along. Difficult conversations are part of work. But you should be able to have those conversations without feeling that the organization is going to turn around and make you the problem.
