Cats have a reputation for being aloof. One minute they’re cuddling you; the next, they’re looking at you like you’re late with their dinner.
But your cat could be showing affection in ways you’ve overlooked. According to feline behaviourist Amanda Campion, these five behaviours can signal a close bond:
1. The slow blink
That sleepy little blink can be a sign of trust. Apparently, cats have a love language—and it requires almost no effort.
2. The head-butt
A gentle bump or face rub can be an affectionate greeting. Consider it a cuddle with a tiny forehead.
3. Bringing you gifts
Sometimes it’s a toy. Sometimes it’s something you really wish had stayed outside. Gift-giving can be part of their social behaviour, although hunting plays a role, too.
4. Sleeping beside you
Choosing to snooze near you can suggest comfort and trust. Stealing most of the bed is apparently included.
5. Wrapping their tail around you
A tail curled around your leg can be a friendly gesture. Enjoy the moment, but avoid grabbing it—many cats dislike having their tails touched.
Every cat is different. Affection might be subtle, but sometimes “I love you” looks a lot like a head-butt followed by a nap.
