Today’s conversation is about how to help children with what they feel about going back to school. It’s not as clear cut as you may think.
Aaron Tompkins, Mariam Serkal, Dr Julie Gowthorpe and along with special guest Peggy Amey-Tompkins, an elementary school teacher, talk about emotional readiness, social confidence, and how parents can support both.
A Cambridge study found it takes parents about a year to tune in to how their child really feels about school. What’s behind that? Think about it: kids come home from school and usually share the hardest part of their day. But that’s not the full picture. Kids often feel happy on the playground, proud in the classroom, excited to see friends, but those moments don’t always make it into conversation.
Manage big feelings by teaching ‘Breathe, Think, Do’. Take a breath, think about what’s happening, then decide what to do. Simple and repeatable.
