Yesterday, women in Iceland – led by their Prime Minister – didn’t go to work. Instead they took to the streets, demanding an end to pay inequity and gender-based violence.
This morning, Sean Kelly and Mariam Serkal asked Dr Julie Gowthorpe, RSW, how much have things changed when in comes to gender equality in the workplace? Do you feel that you are treated differently because of your gender when it comes to work?

What was tolerated by women 30 years ago would be harassment today, but holding people accountable for misogynistic behavior is still a risk to the person making the complaint. You can end up ostracized and your career stalled but this isn’t as overt as it was in the past.

Research says the gap has remained stable, meaning not closed further, over the last twenty years with women making 80 per cent of what men make. Younger workers, in the 25- 34 year range have improved to an 8 per cent gap down from 26 per cent, so there are changes.
