=Merriam-Webster just added 1,400 new words and terms to the dictionary… which means apparently we’ve finally reached the point where things we say on the internet are officially considered language.
The new additions include “looksmaxxing,” “parasocial,” and “Rickroll.”
So congratulations, Rick Astley. You’ve officially been immortalized by the dictionary.
They also added food terms like cake pop, bao, shishito, and chili crisp — because apparently “delicious” wasn’t descriptive enough.
And some very modern phrases are now officially defined, including “cuffing season,” “crashout,” “vibe coding,” “superfood,” and “the Sunday scaries.”
Honestly, I’m less impressed that “vibe coding” made the dictionary…
…and more impressed that the people who write dictionaries apparently know what “vibe coding” is.
But 1,400 new words?
At this rate, by next year the dictionary is just going to be screenshots of TikTok comments.
