Today on the MIX Morning Show, Sean Kelly and Mariam Serkal address the need to feel safe in our community. With crime in our city at a high, many people are not feeling as safe as they once did.
The MIX Morning Crew and Dr Julie Gowthorpe, RSW talk about aspects of this problem and how to recover if you have been a victim of crime.

Statistics Canada’s Crime Severity Index, which measures police-reported crime, was up four per cent overall last year. The index for violent crime showed a five-per-cent increase in 2022, following a six-per-cent increase in 2021. The 531,243 violent incidents reported in 2022 are a 39-per-cent increase over the 382,115 reported in 2015, when a nine-year downward trend in violent crime began to reverse.

Dr Julie also pointed out that over the last few weeks, people in her circle have been talking about things that have happened to them. They and their neighbors had ATVs stolen, as well as items from their home. Others have also had their downtown properties vandalized.
