Many parents have moments where they hear themselves saying something, which they never intended to say that comes from their own childhood.
Today on the MIX Morning Show, Jodie Jenkins and Mariam Serkal sit down with Dr Julie Gowthorpe RSW and talking about breaking generational patterns.
Every family has patterns. Some are positive, like traditions and ways of showing love. Others may involve how we handle emotions, conflict, or stress. The important thing is that we are not stuck repeating what we learned. Awareness gives us the ability to choose something different.
When we are stressed or overwhelmed, we often return to what feels familiar. A parent may raise their voice, shut down, or dismiss emotions, not because they do not love their child, but because those responses were learned somewhere along the way. That moment can become an opportunity for growth.
Instead of asking, ‘What is wrong with me?’ we can ask, ‘What is this reaction showing me?’
