Today on the MIX Morning Show, Jodie Jenkins and Mariam Serkal welcome Dr Julie Gowthorpe, RSW in the studio to talk about Grey Divorce.
Divorcing after 50 is on the rise in Canada and we chat about what you need to consider if this is something on your horizon.
While divorce rates have been dropping among younger Canadians, they’ve stayed relatively steady among people over 50. That means grey divorce now makes up a larger share of divorces overall, and the average age of divorce in Canada has risen from about 36 in 1980 to roughly 46 today.
People are much more focused on finding joy even if this means change. Deciding to stay married because it is stable, gives financial freedom and there is less stress are understandable reasons to stay married – even if you are frustrated with lack of intimacy or feel like you’re not in love as you once were.
It very much depends on the person and their tolerance for change and stress.
Divorce is stressful: cutting your income in half and increasing all your expenses cannot be minimized.
