Last week, the Louvre Museum heist of the French crown jewels had everyone talking. Even Reader’s Digest jumped on the bandwagon and rounded up some of the priciest items ever lifted. Spoiler: the crown jewels take the top spot—go figure. But here are a few other gems from the “How Did They Even Do That?” files:
-
The Mona Lisa – Yep, that Mona Lisa. Swiped in 1911, she went on a little world tour and was finally recovered in 1913. Honestly, maybe she just wanted a vacation.
-
The Empire State Building – In December 2008, someone “stole” the $1.89-billion building…on paper. The New York Daily News filed some totally fake paperwork to transfer the deed. It was all to expose a loophole, but imagine telling your landlord, “Oh, by the way, I own the building now.”
-
The Davidoff-Morini Stradivarius – In October 1995, a $3-million violin from the 1700s disappeared from concert violinist Erica Morini’s apartment. Still missing today. So, if anyone hears a really expensive violin playing somewhere, maybe check the closest jazz club.
Turns out, some people just can’t resist shiny, priceless things.
