If you’re getting ready to sell your house, here’s one of the easiest upgrades you can make: paint it! Seriously. Nearly a third of homeowners give their walls a fresh coat before putting that “For Sale” sign out front. But hold up—before you go slapping white or beige on every surface because it’s “safe,” you might want to rethink that plan.
According to some juicy new research from Zillow, boring colors = boring offers. Turns out, buyers are way more into bold, moody shades than they are into vanilla walls (literally and figuratively). We’re talking greens, blues, and grays—the cool kids of the color wheel.
Zillow asked thousands of home buyers what paint colors made their wallets twitch, and the results are surprisingly specific (and weirdly delightful):
-
Green kitchen cabinets? Cha-ching! Buyers said they’d cough up an extra $1,597 for a kitchen rocking dark olive green. Apparently, guacamole-hued cabinets are hot.
-
Navy blue bedrooms are where it’s at. People will pay $1,815 more for a snooze zone that feels like a cozy, nautical hug.
-
And in the living room? Charcoal gray is the moody, broody color of choice—adding up to a $2,593 boost to your sale price. Who knew walls with a brooding personality could be such a money-maker?
But don’t get cocky with your color wheel. The wrong shade can seriously backfire. A daisy yellow kitchen or a fire-engine-red bedroom? Zillow says buyers would rather not, thanks—offering up to $4,000 less if your color scheme screams “kindergarten art project.”
Why the love for navy and olive? Zillow’s trends expert Amanda Pendleton says it’s all about those nature vibes. “These colors feel calm and contemporary,” she explains. “And that helps buyers imagine themselves living there, doing yoga, sipping matcha, or, you know, arguing over what’s for dinner.”
Moral of the story: paint smart. It’s cheaper than a remodel, faster than therapy, and if you pick the right shades, it could mean a few extra grand in your pocket. Just maybe keep the daisy yellow for your beach towel.
