Impulsivity can present real challenges for parents and educators so on the MIX Morning Show, Mariam Serkal and Greg Moulton talk with Dr Julie Gowthorpe, RSW about ideas on how to help improve self regulation at home and in the classroom.
Impulsivity refers to actions that are sudden, unplanned, and often without regard for consequences. It’s like hitting the gas pedal before thinking about where the car is headed. Children and teens, and adults for that matter, with impulsivity might act on immediate desires or emotions without considering the long-term impact.
Impulsive behaviors can take many forms. On a lower level, your child or teen may constantly interrupt conversations or in the classroom, have difficulty sitting, to more risky actions like as teens reckless driving or substance use.
They can also include difficulties in staying focused, following instructions, or regulating emotions.
