Guess what? Canada has just achieved a significant milestone in its population journey! Today, at approximately 2:55 pm ET, the population clock of Statistics Canada proudly announced the crossing of the remarkable 40 million mark. It’s as if Canada’s population collectively threw a little celebration and triumphantly exclaimed, “We did it!”
Curious about how such intricate population changes are meticulously tracked? Well, let me enlighten you. Statistics Canada has ingeniously devised a sophisticated tracker that takes into account various factors such as births, deaths, immigration, emigration, non-permanent residents, and even inter-provincial migration. It’s akin to assembling a complex population puzzle that they continuously piece together.
Interestingly, StatsCan had actually foreseen earlier in the week that the population would hit 40 million just before 3 pm ET. Talk about precision! A representative from StatsCan highlighted that Canada’s population has been experiencing rapid growth in recent times. To put it into perspective, between January 2022 and January 2023, an astonishing 1,050,110 individuals were added. That’s equivalent to adding an entire city the size of Edmonton or Ottawa.
This growth signifies a remarkable 2.7% year-over-year increase from 2021, marking the highest annual growth rate recorded since 1957. Back in those days, Canada experienced a baby boom after the war, along with an influx of Hungarian Revolution refugees. It’s evident that Canada has always been a sought-after destination.
Now, let’s shift our focus to the provinces with the highest populations. Leading the pack is Ontario, reigning with an impressive 15.5 million residents. Quebec follows closely behind with 8.8 million inhabitants, while the cool kids affectionately refer to British Columbia as “BC,” which boasts a population of 5.4 million.
Canada has proudly achieved the incredible milestone of reaching a population of 40 million, and it’s undoubtedly a cause for celebration. With its vibrant growth and diversity, Canada is unquestionably a happening place to be. One can’t help but wonder how many people will be part of the grand celebration when Canada reaches 50 million. Let’s just hope there’s enough cake to go around for everyone!
