I am absolutely disgusted and angry to hear about yet another incident of vandalism in Belleville over the weekend. The Veterans Memorial Bridge monument on Bell Boulevard was defaced, and the lettering will have to be replaced, as well as a new granite stone monument made. This is completely unacceptable and disrespectful to those who have served our country and deserve to be honored and respected.
It is truly disappointing to see that there are individuals out there who have no regard for the property of others, and the significance that it may hold. It is not only a financial burden for the city to have to constantly repair and replace these vandalized structures, but it also affects the emotional and mental well-being of those who hold a deep connection to these monuments and structures.
Last week, the Riverside West Pirate Ship playground was also vandalized, resulting in a closure for almost two days and a costly cleanup of around $2,500. This is not only a waste of taxpayer money but also a waste of time and resources that could have been used for more constructive purposes.
It is time for people to start taking responsibility for their actions and to start treating public property with the respect that it deserves. It is important for the community to come together to put a stop to this destructive behavior and to hold those who commit these acts accountable for their actions. We should all take pride in our community and work together to keep it beautiful, safe, and respectful.
If anyone has any information regarding these acts of vandalism, I urge you to come forward and report it to the authorities. We must all do our part to put an end to these senseless acts of destruction and show that we are a community that values and respects our public spaces and the people they represent.
