Cats care more about their owners than you might think. Japanese researchers looked at 48 cats that lived with at least two other pets, either in a home, or at a cat café. Experiment results suggested that cats from the same household (or café) know each other’s names and “possibly” the names of their owners. A researcher says, “One possible explanation has to do with competition. A cat might receive food when the owner calls her name but not when she calls another cat’s name.” Also, cats are never in competition with humans at mealtimes, so they have less of a reason to know a human’s name.
