A Catholic elementary school in Tennessee has decided to pull all Harry Potter books, claiming that they contain real curses and spells. The Reverend Dan Reehil outlawed the books at St. Edward Catholic School library after he consulted with several exorcists in the states and Italy who suggested they be removed. He told parents via email, “These books present magic as both good and evil, which is not true, but in fact a clever deception.” He added, “The curses and spells used in the books are actual curses and spells; which when read by a human being risk conjuring evil spirits into the presence of the person reading the text.” Rebecca Hammel, superintendent of schools for the Catholic Diocese of Nashville said in a statement that the Catholic Church doesn’t have a position on the books and that the series will remain in other schools throughout the diocese. According to Fortune, the Harry Potter book series is the best selling book series in history and have sold more than 500 million copies worldwide.
