If it feels like your money disappears faster every month… you’re definitely not alone.
The University of Wisconsin-Madison has some simple advice for getting a handle on rising costs.
First, write down where your money is going. Separate the bills that basically stay the same — like rent or a mortgage — from flexible expenses like groceries, gas, utilities, and streaming.
Then look for the easy cuts. Maybe it’s one less streaming service… or fewer takeout orders.
They also suggest keeping track of those expenses you forget about until they suddenly show up — things like car insurance, taxes, birthdays, holidays, and back-to-school shopping.
And be careful with the credit card. If you can’t pay it off every month, interest and fees can turn a small purchase into a much bigger one.
Finally, if you share expenses with a partner, spouse, or roommates, actually talk about the money. Maybe even schedule a regular money meeting.
Because nothing says romance like… “So, how much are we spending on Netflix?”
And if your income still isn’t covering the bills, look into whether you qualify for financial assistance.
Basically, know where your money’s going before it quietly walks out the door.
