Today we’re talking about divorce, but with a different frame.
Often we hear “I’ve got to win this” but this morning, Sean Kelly and Mariam Serkal sat down with Dr Julie Gowthorpe RSW to talk about why – and how – to change the thinking to a win-win for the entire family.
They were also joined by Sharlene Weitzman, who works at Gowthorpe Therapists with Dr. Julie, and focuses on helping court-involved families through separation and divorce.
When parents separate, the couple relationship ends but the parenting system continues. When it becomes parent versus parent, kids don’t get two strong parents but instead, they get two stressed adults pulling them in opposite directions.
A “win-win” is not about adults feeling thrilled with every outcome. It’s about building conditions where the child can grow without carrying adult conflict in their body.
