It’s back-to-school today and parents are shifting routines.
Today on the MIX Morning Show, Sean Kelly, Mariam Serkal and Dr Julie Gowthorpe RSW talk about how to shift habits, because new routines after summer always feel uncomfortable at first.
Because every habit shift comes with discomfort at the start. Our brains crave the familiar and comfort. During summer, kids get used to late nights, more screens, more flexibility. When September hits, suddenly there’s structure again, so experiencing pushback is normal.
Think of routines as protective. Sleep, regular meals, downtime without screens. All of this supports mental health. Without structure, kids are more likely to feel anxious, irritable, or distracted.
