Today on the MIX Morning Show, Sean Kelly, Mariam Serkal and Dr Julie Gowthorpe RSW talk about something that we have all experienced at some point: feeling shamed by someone.
Whether it’s a comment from a colleague, a friend, or even a stranger, how can we respond when people make us feel bad?
Shame is a complex emotion involving a deep-seated feeling of inadequacy or unworthiness. It makes us feel like there is something wrong with who we are as a person. It’s different from guilt, which focuses on actions – I did something wrong.
Guilt is essential to the functioning of society. Shame is about the self. When we experience shame, we feel exposed and believe something is fundamentally wrong with us.
