Today on the MIX Morning Show, Sean Kelly and Mariam Serkal talk with Dr Julie Gowthorpe, RSW and dive deep into a topic that touches everyone: compassion.
It’s a virtue we all cherish, but have you ever wondered when compassion might actually lead to unintended consequences?
Compassion, at its core, is the ability to understand the suffering of others and to feel motivated to alleviate that suffering. It’s about recognizing suffering, empathizing with it, and then taking meaningful steps to help, whether through support, kindness, or meaningful assistance.
As the title suggests, it can go wrong when compassion leads to unintended harm or enables unhealthy behaviors.
The problem occurs with the involvement of guilt.
Guilt is an emotional experience characterized by feelings of remorse, regret, or responsibility for something perceived as wrong or harmful frequently accompanies decisions made out of compassion.
