With Remembrance Day approaching, as a community, as a country, we are pausing to recognize the service, contribution and loss of veterans and active military.
This morning, Sean Kelly and Mariam Serkal talk with Dr Julie Gowthorpe, RSW and Jade Gammon, a therapist with Gowthorpe Therapists, about the lasting effect of war, seeing war, on soldiers and their families, so that we can honor them with understanding.
Canadian forces, many of them posted today at CFB Trenton or living in the Quinte region, were involved in the war in Afghanistan between 2001 and 2014.
This means it has been 10 years since Canadians were brought home. During the 12 year war in Afghanistan, more than 40,000 Canadian Armed Forces members served. The war killed 165 Canadians — 158 soldiers and 7 civilians.
Many others suffered severe physical injury and mental health problems including post-traumatic stress disorder.
