The Bay of Quinte community has been rocked this past week with the sad news that Shannan Hickey, a 26-year-old RN at BGH, lost her life in a senseless act of domestic violence early Tuesday morning. Shannan, a graduate of the Loyalist College/Brock University nursing program, had been working on Quinte 6 at BGH and had found her calling in the nursing profession.
This morning, we welcomed Leah Morgan, Executive Director of Victim Services, to discuss the facts surrounding domestic violence in Canada. Leah lets us know that previously, a woman was killed every 6 days due to domestic violence, and that number has shockingly risen to 1 woman every 48 hours.
“Domestic violence, also known as intimate partner violence (IPV), refers to multiple forms of harm or abuse that are caused by a current or former spouse or intimate partner. It can also happen in different forms of relationships, including:
- Within marriage, dating relationships, or common law
- Regardless of the gender and sexual orientation of the partners
- During the relationship and even after it has ended
- Whether or not partners are sexually intimate with one another or living together”
With 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men experiencing domestic abuse, the odds are that we all know someone who has been part of this statistic.
If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic abuse, please do not hesitate to reach out to get the assistance that you need.
