On this day in 2010, Laszlo Hanyecz made the first documented purchase with Bitcoin by buying two Papa John’s pizzas for 10,000 Bitcoin, which would be worth $700 million today. Back then, Bitcoin had no real-world value and the pizzas cost around $25. Laszlo has no regrets, saying he saw it as free pizza from a hobby. He wrote a program to mine Bitcoin and felt like he was “winning the internet” that day. If he hadn’t done it, someone else probably would have—and maybe not with pizza!
Happy Bitcoin Pizza Day to all who celebrate! Wondering what that is?
