Have participation trophies turned kids into squishy marshmallows? Apparently, a bunch of politicians in North Carolina believe so and are taking matters into their own hands by pushing for a ban on them.
Last week, three Republican state senators unleashed the “Eliminate Participation Trophies Act” – sounds like a real page-turner, huh? This act would prevent any government-sponsored youth sporting event in North Carolina from giving out participation trophies or ribbons. Instead, trophies and ribbons can only be awarded based on “identified performance achievements.” In other words, no more gold stars for just showing up.
While some folks think this idea is genius, others are rolling their eyes harder than a pair of dice on a craps table. I mean, come on, we’re talking about six and seven-year-olds here! Plus, what’s next? Are we going to ban balloons and cake at birthday parties to teach kids that life is tough?
But hey, maybe these participation trophies are secretly ruining our children’s lives. Who knows, maybe they’ll grow up to be entitled millennials who expect a trophy just for existing. Oh wait, we already have those.
