Getting good grades isn’t easy for every kid, and a new study finds telling a child they can do anything if they try hard enough could actually make their grades worse. University of Edinburgh found kids whose parents tried to motivate them to try harder in subjects they struggled did not improve their exame results. Expert warn that the steps being taken to improve grades, such as introducing cartoon superheroes who love math, for example, is actually “papering over big troubles in education” in Scotland. Ultimately, they say that while a positive attitude is important, overdoing it might ignore the science that’s proven people are gifted in different areas and topics. One researcher says, “A ‘growth mindset’ attitude suggests you can reprogram your brain. Our study tested whether invoking a growth mindset would improve grades, and we found that it didn’t.”
