Southeastern Ontario Museum represents Canada in the International Museum Dance Off
– The staff at Glanmore National Historic Site, a historic house museum located in Belleville, Ontario, 188km southeast of Toronto, show off their funky side in a fun dance video entered into an international competition.
The Museum Dance Off, currently in its fifth year, is hosted by the blog site When You Work at a Museum. It was started as a way to show that “…museums aren’t dusty, dingy hallways full of creaky old nerds in orthopedic shoes and bowties. They are vibrant lively places full of talented, creative people who love what they do.” This year, 48 museums representing 14 different countries are entered.
For the past several weeks daily online competitions have been held to collect votes and determine regional and National champions. Glanmore National Historic Site successfully defended their title as National Champion. The museum won the Canadian round on April 17, 2018 with 49% of all online votes in the Canadian Finals . Now the museum is gearing up for an epic dance battle in the final “Thunderdome” round to be held on May 14, 2018.
Staff and volunteers, and even Belleville City Councillor Egerton Boyce, put on their dancing shoes to create a dance video to showcase the museum in a unique way. The video which can be viewed on Glanmore’s YouTube channel https://youtu.be/BK2WgNBdS9Q features the 1977 song “Brick House” by The Commodores. The video has already gone viral with thousands of views. “We are thrilled with the response to our video which helps build awareness about our museum and possibly connect with potential new audiences,” says Melissa Wakeling, Education and Marketing Coordinator. According to Wakeling, the museum now needs to leverage attention from social and traditional media outlets in order to gain votes in the final round.
Voting takes place from 8:00 am on TODAY to 7:59 am on Tuesday, May 15. Video entries from around the world can be viewed and voting will take place at the blog site www.whenyouworkatamuseum.com<http://www.whenyouworkatamuseum.com> . “Get your devices ready and rest up your fingers and thumbs,” says Wakeling, “as we will need all the votes we can get to win in final round.”
